Brisvaani Aid Foundation

For Jatish and Shamsher, Brisbanes finest and much loved Do Phool’s, it was yet another Wednesday morning at Radio Brisvaani’s Studio at Sinnamon Park in Brisbane. In distance the sun pierced through the trees, the birds were happily chirping in their usual tones as Jatish and Shamsher got with the morning’s Do Phool program, doing their best to entertain and inform their beloved listeners and at the same time giving them a feeling of a home away from home. Then out of the blue there was phone call from a listener. The listener pleaded for Krishneel Sharma, a young boy from a very poor family in Fiji who needed financial assistance for his eye surgery.

For Radio Brisvaani this was nothing new. Since it began, the station has not only entertained and informed its listeners, it had also assisted numerous organisations by providing many hours of free advertising and voluntary projects such as radiothons to support their fund raising initiatives.

The people of Brisbane have generously supported Radio Brisvaani’s radio-thons and have helped raise thousands, of much-needed, dollars. The Fiji- Australia Club Diabetes Appeal, the Australian Red Cross Indian Earthquake Aid and the Fiji Drought Relief Aid are some of the fund raising efforts that the station has voluntarily supported..

The phone call for help and the radiothon which followed not only paved the way to Krishneels eye surgery, it also led to the birth of a new concept and a new organisation. Listener feeback and with encouragment from the Radio Brisvaani team, the Brisvaani Aid Foundation was created to ensure greater accountability for donations and fairness in giving support to the needy.

The foundation which is independent of the Radio Station consists of a board of directors, appointed from the community. The function of the board members is to liaise with individuals and community groups and device solutions for helping the needy. The board also monitors the collection and distribution of funds generously donated by Brisvaani listeners.
